Peripheral nerve injuries are a commonly encountered clinical problem and often result in severe functional deficits. The effects of physical exercise on the muscle and nerve functions following peripheral nerve injury have often been studied. In the present study, the effects of treadmill running on functional recovery and Schwann cell proliferation following sciatic crushed nerve injury in rats were investigated using a 5-bromo-2¡¯-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-specific immunohistochemistry. The main results of this study were that rats with sciatic nerve injury developed characteristic gait changes with dropped thesciatic function index (SFI) value, and rats of exercise group after sciatic nerve injury showed rapidly enhanced SFI value and an increased Schwann cell proliferation. These results suggested that exercise after peripheral nerve injury might be effective in the functional recovery via enhanced Schwann cell proliferation.
